Vienna Waits for You

“13 Going on 30” is an underrated movie. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo were wonderfully delightful in this gem. She plays the 13-year old girl who becomes 30 overnight which is a silly over-done premise but the way they tell the story and the performances truly make this a joy to watch. What could’ve been awful becomes a funny and even touching story thanks to moments like this scene where Jennifer realizes that she doesn’t want to be a grown up anymore and wants to be a kid again. Don’t we all feel that way sometimes? The song they selected for this sequence was absolutely perfect and makes it a memorable scene. I like when she goes to the house she grew up in and sees her old room. So emotional, especially when she sees her parents and crawls into bed with her mom during a thunderstorm. I also loved how she stares at the group of teenaged girls on the train remembering her youth. We’ve all done that.

Billy Joel’s “Vienna” says it all!

Here are some other scenes I really liked

Thriller

Jenna reunites with Matty as adults

Here’s a big spoiler alert… the ending… which is so wonderful!
It begins with Jenna going to talk to Matt before his wedding and it’s so heart wrenching especially he tells her that they can’t turn back time and they’ve moved on.
Then he gives her that pink doll house!!!

Oh and then the very end is so amazing when she becomes a kid again and see Matty and kisses him!
I love the editing as they run up the stairs holding hands as kids then become married couple and wind up in front of their pink house!

It IS a great movie! One of our favorites. I forgot that song was in the movie. Wish I could pull out my Billy Joel CDs right now; alas…

I totally agree! we love this movie! It’s BIG but with a twist. I think Jennifer Gardner is underrated. She was good in Juno, too!

I loved that movie. It was so sweet in such a simple way with an amazing message. I had completely forgotten that song was used in the movie. You know I am a huge Billy Joel fan and his music always moves me. Seeing it set to the scenes in the movie was very powerful considering the context.

Stumbled onto your site via Twitter, interesting selections you have here. Was vaguely aware of this movie, and even though I believe Jennifer Garner is most definitely underrated (and I became addicted to Alias, which, like most shows I like, of course ended abruptly and incomplete), would’ve never thought of watching this movie.

Vienna Waits for You, however, is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs, and I have to say, it really does seem perfect for this scene.

    (sigh) Adding to NetFlix! 🙂

    Cheers,
    Dan
