The Underdog

Goran-Ivanisevic-2001

One of the main reasons why I love sports is watching the underdog win against all odds. I was very pleased with the men’s finals of Wimbledon yesterday. It is one of the big four majors in professional tennis and the man who became champion was Goran Ivanisevic from Croatia. What made it so amazing was the fact that he had been out of tennis for a couple of years due to injuries and quite frankly because of a broken spirit after losing in the finals of Wimbledon for the third time in 1998. He had given up.
Then his dad convinced him to give it another try this year, so he was given a wild card entrance since he had not been playing much. He has always been a great player, but lacked the mental toughness or confidence to win the big one. He finally did so yesterday.
