Eros Era

I was in Italy in 1985 when Eros Romanzzotti performed his classic “Una Storia Importante” at the annual San Remo festival. It’s a special song to me because it was the theme of my glorious summer in Italy that year.

I love how YouTube can span an artist’s entire career in seconds with a simple click. The two videos below go from 1985 to 2008, jumping 23 years. Eros still looks and sounds great but you can see how much he has aged and changed.

Bad Day

Even though it’s been a few years since it was a hit, I still love “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter! It still turns even the worst of days into a better one because of all the fond memories it brings me. Another reason why the song’s extra special to me is because my youngest son also loved that song when he was about three and sang it all the time, especially when I came home from work which always made me laugh. He’d also sit on my lap and watch the sweet music video with me over and over again and sing it of course.

As for the song itself, everything about it was perfect. The music, Daniel’s singing and the lyrics. Even the music video was a pure joy to experience. It was a wonderful little movie that worked with the song incredibly well. The two leads were also excellent in their roles and the story was very sweet without being too corny.

I remember the first time I heard it on American Idol when they started using it at the end of shows when someone was sent home and they showed highlights of their journey on Idol. The song and Daniel Powter quickly became a sensation.

Never Stop

“Never Stop” by the Brand New Heavies has been one of my favorite songs ever since I first heard it. I think it’s one of the best summer feel good songs ever.
Perhaps it’s extra special to me because it came out during a special time in my life as well. In any event, it still makes me smile and feel good all over.

Wear Sunscreen

The 1999 song wear sunscreen by Baz Luhrmann was based on an essay written in 1997 by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich called “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young“.

It quickly became popular as people circulated it via email and photocopies, an early example of viral marketing. Somehow the piece became falsely linked to Kurt Vonnegut and a commencement speech, but eventually the truth prevailed, thankfully. Mary Schmich released a book based on the essay and later a song and music video were produced (plus countless parodies, foreshading YouTube’s bread and butter).

I’d totally forgotten how wonderful and powerful this piece was until a friend of mine sent me the music video on my FaceBook wall. Talk about a surprise wake-up call. I fell in love with it all over again and felt compelled to share it with others who’ve also forgotten its important message as well as for those who haven’t experienced it yet. I truly hope I don’t forget this amazing work of heart again! Here are two different versions of the music videos, the first one being the original and the second one being a short-film version. Lastly, I share the complete essay that started it all.

Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who’d rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.

Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’97:

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don’t worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Shine


Salvador’s “SHINE” is an inspirational song in so many ways. First and foremost it is a powerful song of praise for Christians. However, I believe this song can inspire anyone that hears it. The music, the voice and the words are uplifting and just so motivating. We all want to Shine and do our best in life. We want to help others as the song illustrates so well.

My favorite part is when Salvador shares a couple of easy ways that we can Shine as friends in life:

Here I Go Again

WhiteSnake was one of the biggest big hair bands of the 1980sfor me . “Here I Go Again” was their best work and their biggest hit as it reached number one in the country over 20 years ago in 1987! What people automatically think about when it comes to this song is the beautiful Tawny Kitaen girating across the hood of a sports car in the music video. Granted, I’m not complaining about that visual, not in the least! I just believe the song deserves more respect than that! It is a powerful song in many ways. I love the passion David Coverdale conveys in the song.

The lyrics are very special because it deals with searching for one’s self and the meaning of life itself. We all find ourselves in that position and I think this song will forever be extra meaningful for me because it came along during my soul-searching period. I still get chills whenever I hear this song and stop whatever I’m doing to listen and remember. I also smile knowing how much I’ve learned since those days and how much more I’ve yet to learn.

Father & Son

The song “Father & Son” by Cat Stevens has become increasingly poignant and powerfully meaningful to me as I raise my three children. They continue to grow up faster than I want them to but what can you do about it? All I can do is try to be the best example I can be and shower them with all the love I can and share whatever wisdom I’ve got. Who knows how much of it will “stick” but we must try our best every day to prepare them for the real world out there. Gosh, the thought of them living on their own sends shivers down my spine. Someone once said, “Having a child is like living the rest of your life with your heart outside your body”. So true.

Here’s the wonderful Cat Stevens performing his classic “Father & Son” some 35 years apart. The first from 1972 (original music video and a live performance) and one from 2007. Checkout the lyrics below. Keep in mind that this song is actually a conversation between a father and son, not just from the dad’s perspective as most people think.

Father of Mine

“Father of Mine” by EverClear is a special song for me because it truly hits home for me. I relate to the words so much because our father left our mom with four sons and I never really got to know him. The part that gets me the most is “I was just scared white boy in a black neighborhood” because we grew up in Newark, New Jersey. ageless rockers

I watched a cool special on PBS where acts from the 60s performed their hits (most of them in their 60s themselves!). It was so wild seeing them young in video clips and then today performing live. Their bodies might’ve aged but their hearts are forever young thanks to music.
