Oh How The Years Go By

I love Amy Grant and her “Oh How The Years Go By” is one of my favorites. It truly sums it all up for parents. I’ve always heard other parents say that but now I see what they mean. I remember when each of my three children were born. It feels like yesterday. It really does. Please do your best to enjoy it every chance you get, even when you’re dealing with a million things, changing diapers, cleaning up urps and messes. You will miss things you never imagined you would.

Here are Nicholas (10 this month), Matthew (6) and Rachel (3)
I made this little movie with a fantastic program called MuveeReveal in a matter of minutes.
They’re also behind SHWUP which is an online photo and movie service.

Christmas Pai 2008

001It’s no secret that this is my favorite time of the year. I LOVE the holiday season. I get geeked up (more so than ever) starting around Halloween and it all builds around Thanksgiving and intensifies there after. Soon after turkey day is when I start decorating the house for Christmas inside and outside. Here are some pictures and stories behind the traditions. As you can see on the right, I started my Christmas countdown on twitter from my iPhone early.

041I got all three kids to help me this year so Santa Pai had elves! Nicholas is 9, Matthew 5 and Rachel 3. She was extremely excited to help out because it was her first time to do so.

We started with the large-sized nativity scene which includes the three wisemen, a shepherd, some animals and of course Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. Next to the baby Jesus is a spot that shines a light into the branches above them into the night.

Next to the nativity scene is a Huge inflatable JOY and a giant snowman. There’s also a Christmas train that lights up in between the snowman and the nativity scene. I guess it’s like a polar express.

The other staples are the massive lit wreaths that I hang on both sides of the front of the house as well as a enormous red ribbon that I hang over the front door walkway of the house. I use a red spotlight to highlight the ribbon at night which looks great. There’s also a dozen large candy canes that line the walk to the front door.

Here are some photos of everything.

I also enjoy changing the flags outside all year round depending on the season. We do it a couple of times during the holidays of course. Here are some of them.

Inside, there are other traditional decorations. We got a new pre-lit tree because the previous one was actually way too big! The new one is perfect and looks more full. We hang ornaments that all mean something like baby’s first Christmas for each child and one for each year of their life as well as for ourselves such as our first house, the Olympic games in Atlanta, etc. etc.

As for me personally, my favorite movie of all-time is Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” so I collect everything about that movie. I have books, ornaments, posters, action figures, and even the rare collectable set of buildings and figures that Target sold a decade ago for a limited time. Here are some photos.

Other traditions are the Elf on the Shelf which we call Elfish (like Elvis). He appears in a new spot every morning magically so the kids get a kick out of finding where he is when they get up. It’s magic I tell ya! We also use this tin Santa to count down each day starting from 24 days out. The kids pull a heart-shaped number off each day and place it in his toy bag.

So there you have a taste of a very Pai Christmas. I cap it off every year by watching It’s a Wonderful Life as well as a couple of Christmas Carol movies. I love the 1951 Alistair Simm version the best but love all of the renditions including the awful ones like Henry “The Fonz” Winkler as Scrooge in “An American Christmas Carol”.

In any event, I love Christmas time like everybody does. I try to savor each and every moment that I can because like life it all flies by so quickly. Before you know it, the entire Holiday season is gone. I do my best to enjoy as much of it as I can. I also try to keep that Christmas spirit all year long much like Ebenezer Scrooge supposedly did after his experiences with the ghosts of Christmas. I love how people seem happier and kinder during the holidays too. I truly wish we all could make it last longer. If not all year long, as often as possible. :)

Home for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is almost here and the past several days online has had a common theme for me. Everywhere I turned, the subject matter of homelessness. It started when I shared a great article called “Famous People Who Have Been Homeless”. It was an inspirational piece because it showed how anybody, even powerful rich famous people can wind up destitute and on the streets. It also showed how they managed to get back on their feet and achieve greatness.

Well, the response to the share was great. A friend LilPecan and I had the following conversation about it:

image

LilPecan eventually reposted her homeless post along with new comments in an excellent piece called “Does My Homelessnes Bother You?”

Days later I shared this message and YouTube video about the 11 year old boy that died, Brenden Foster. His dying wish was to help the homeless and that wish came true as a bunch of people made sure of it.

Then another friend, @JillFoster posted this video on Utterli about Homelessness and a personal story.

That brings us to today as I think about Thanksgiving and how grateful I am about all the blessings in my life. My professional and personal life has been amazingly blissful. Still, my heart aches whenever I learn about the Brenden Fosters of the world and realize that despite all of the technological breakthroughs we’ve experience we still have not figured out a way to stamp out homelessness. Given the current state of the economy and escalating unemployment, increasing numbers of US—not THEM—will become homeless. The old adage is true, “There but for the grace of God go I”.

Please be thankful for all the blessings in your life. Also, try to help any of our fallen brothers and sisters as much as possible. Anything we do for one, benefits us all. Being home for the holidays means so much more to me now because I’m thankful to have a place called home. Too many of us don’t.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. Here’s Josh Groban and “Thankful” followed by the beautiful lyrics

THANKFUL

Somedays We Forget
To Look Around Us
Somedays We Can’t See
The Joy That Surrounds Us
So Caught Up Inside Ourselves
We Take When We Should Give.
So For Tonight We Pray For
What We Know Can Be.
And On This Day We Hope For
What We Still Can’t See.
It’s Up To Us To Be The Change
And Even Though We All Can Still Do More
There’s So Much To Be Thankful For.
Look Beyond Ourselves
There’s So Much Sorrow
It’s Way Too Late To Say
I’ll Cry Tomorrow
Each Of Us Must Find Our Truth
It’s So Long Overdue
So For Tonight We Pray For
What We Know Can Be
And Every Day We Hope For
What We Still Can’t See
It’s Up To Us To Be The Change
And Even Though We All Can Still Do More
There’s So Much To Be Thankful For.
Even With Our Differences
There Is A Place We’re All Connected
Each Of Us Can Find Each Other’s Light
So For Tonight We Pray For
What We Know Can Be
And On This Day We Hope For
What We Still Can’t See
It’s Up To Us To Be The Change
And Even Though This World Needs So Much More
There’s So Much To Be Thankful For

9/11 drawing I did

I was cleaning up some stuff from my computer (still) and stumbled across a drawing I did a few days after the shattering impact of 9/11. I was awestruck by the flood of people in the streets of NYC holding up photos of missing loved ones. I still get chills thinking of the expressions of extreme pain and desperation on all those faces. Then I saw the startling images of the world famous new york skyline sans its twin towers. It’s still shocking whenever I see it. Then I saw the lonely lady liberty standing in the midst of smoke and chaos without her beloved twins. All of those images and emotions combined into the drawing you see here. It’s raw and something I did in one take and I never dared to draw it better. It was like a photograph of the heart …my heart for those people…for us all….

Here’s the powerful song “Overcome” by Live that captures the feelings I still have about 9/11

Suicide

utterz-image
I was browsing thru an old LiveJournal that I used to keep way back in 2000 and stumbled across the following entry regarding a friend who committed suicide. It still hurts thinking of it even after all these years. I hope this helps someone out there.

Suicide
I just found out that an old friend of mine committed suicide last night. I am numb and shocked with disbelief. I always knew he had mental problems, but never imagined he would ever throw away God’s greatest gift….life. I feel at a loss for words. I keep thinking of how many times I’ve wanted to call him just to see what he was up to and to encourage him, perhaps I could have saved his life….who knows. I am kicking myself for not calling him or emailing him.

I remember hearing how depressed he was after losing his job at the place we met years ago.
I called him up and he told me that he was getting treatment for depression and I even hired him to work for me as an assistant for my network a couple of years ago, but that didn’t work out. He just wasn’t happy here and he quit.

I lost track after I gave him a great job reference, which did help him land a good job. However, I did get another call from another employer for yet another job reference for him a few months later, which led me to think that he did not last long at the previous place of employment. So apparently, he could not keep a job and might have been in the middle of foreclosure of his home? I don’t know the details, but it must have been real bad for him to cash in his chips.
He was a strong believer too, which makes this even more shocking.

Anyway, sorry to be such a bummer. I just needed to vent. Please, dear friend, if you even suspect that someone you know is depressed or even the least bit discouraged, talk to them!
Take them out to lunch and have a long talk with them. Tell them how precious this life is, no matter how bad things might seem, there is always a rainbow at the other end of the storm.

Rest in peace, Dennis.

BrainDumping

Sometimes you just need to capture a thought in your head or else it’ll be gone forever. There are many ways to record these ideas or brainstorms, but none of them truly take full advantage of the social media and social networking benefits available today. Sure, there are many good mindmapping tools online but none of them work well with mobile devices which is critical when it comes to capturing thoughts wherever and whenever you have them. The process needs to be quick and easy too. Here are some mobile methods for handling your braindumping on the go.

Wridea has just released 2.0 after two long years in Beta. It was previously reveiwed here in the Best Checklist Sites. Judging from my initial experiences with the new look and feel of Wridea’s totally overhauled GUI, I have to admit that it is much improved.
Here are some of the key new features:

  • Full API support for integrating Wridea with third party projects, systems, websites, desktop and mobile applications
  • New user interface for faster idea management
  • Improved idea collaboration with friends or other Wridea users
  • RSS feeds of your idea pages and idea comments
  • Better friend management
  • Expandability with Idea Tools

The best feature of Wridea is the ability to send your ideas to your account via your own email address. The format of the email is Idea_username@wridea.com so it’s easy to remember. Just add the entry to your cell phone’s address book and you will be able to capture your thoughts and ideas anytime, anywhere straight to your wridea account. You can share these entries and collaborate if you want but mostly I think it’s best suited for braindumping.

Here are a couple of screencasts of the new and much improved Wridea.
What is Wridea?
What are the best new features of Wridea 2.0?

Jott is an excellent service to use for capturing your ideas thru your cell phone. Unlike Wridea which does this thru the use of a personalized email address that posts to your online account, Jott accomplishes this in a unique manner via your own phone number. Once you call Jott it asks “Who do you want to Jott?” and you simply reply with “Me” to capture thoughts and ideas to your account. The nice thing about this is that Jott also transcribes your audio message to text and emails it to you so it can be copied and pasted as you wish. The accuracy isn’t that bad but it isn’t 100% either so you must double-check every time. Here’s a visual explanation. Here’s a list of all the tricks you can do with Jott on your cell phone.

Zoho Planner also allows you to send thoughts and ideas to your online account via your own unique email address. You can then turn those notes into to do items, appointments on your calendar or add them as notes to your planner. While the functions work and come in handy, the interface is gludgy and not very user-friendly.

Remember The Milk is mostly for tracking tasks and appointments but you can very well use it to manage your thoughts and ideas because it also provides you with your own email address. So, you can use your cell phone to send any idea you had right to your RTM account. Another perk is the way that RTM integrates seamlessly with GMail (thanks to Firefox)! Here’s a video of how that looks. Here’s a tour of what it can do.

Utterz is like a hybrid of Twitter + Seesmic + Tumbler + Jott. It has some new features that allow you to send ideas privately to your utterz account via email (the format is very easy to remember, username@utterz.com). You can record private audio messages on your cell phone and send them to yourself privately to play back later on or make public and embed on your website or in the utterz public timeline.

Final Thoughts on Thought Capturing
Look for this space to continue to catch on fire thanks to the ever increasing popularity of social networking and mobile devices like the iPhone, Blackberry and many others. It will become increasingly easier to capture and share whatever we want, even those thoughts that used to vanish into thin air.

Create professional videos online

Animoto is a new online video editing service but unlike any you’ve used before. You can quickly and easily create impressive videos with your own photo’s and music and share them instantly via email or by embedding it on your website/blog. The special effects are extremely slick and professional quality. If you don’t like how things have been generated you can click the remix button and it automatically recreates the video (without touching the original!). You can also remix the original video yourself and change the images or music and again keep the original intact.

Here is a sample video I put together in less than five minutes! I just chose 10 photos (the minimum requirement) from my computer and added one of my favorite songs from my mp3 collection (The Simple Things) and let Animoto do its thing. It actually took longer for the service to render and produce the finished video than it took to design it!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmNXl7v8vKY ]

But Wait There’s More!

You can actually use images you have stored online from Flickr, Photobucket, Picaso or other sites. You can also use music from Animoto’s impressive online music library.

When you’re done creating your videos they are all stored in your own library called My Videos. Another fantastic feature is its integration with YouTube! With the click of a button your videos can be exported to your YouTube account, tagged and bagged! You can also download your videos to save them to your computer.

Here’s their 60-second demo:
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvjRzaUYoLw&feature=related]

How Much?
OK, creating professional videos can’t be cheap, so how much will it cost? Well, the basic account is free which lets you create unlimited 30-second videos which is a great deal! If you want to produce a full-length video then you can either chose the pay-per-video option which is only $3 per video or the incredible unlimited videos and download package for just $30 not per month but per year! Amazing, huh?

Final Thoughts
While I love the unique remixing feature that never produces the same exact video twice in a row, I hope they someday give more options and controls over that feature. It would be awesome to be able to pick and choose whatever effects and transitions we want just like we do with presentation packages and full-blown desktop video packages. Still, who can complain about an online service that can offer this kind of high-quality type of product that produces such professional results so quickly and easily?

One last thing, don’t think of this as just for home movies and personal use. I have no doubts that many businesses will make full-use of this technology to produce cool marketing and promotional videos for their websites and viral marketing campaigns.

The Musician's Heart

My brother is living proof that true musicians play music their entire lives no matter what. He’s a family man with several kids and owns his own successful audio and home automation business but still makes the time to practice with his band and perform live gigs on a regular basis! He doesn’t do it for the fame or fortune, just for the thrill and satisfaction of sharing his love of music with people. Period.

I truly believe that he has only improved with time which is amazing when you think about it. Most talents or activities erode and decline with time but not so with music. I think it keeps you forever young as well. I also admire his determination to never give up his dream of playing music. He has told me that he will always play no matter what happens in life. I am so proud of my little bro.

Here’s my brother Lou with his band Norton’s Remedy in a recent gig in our home town of Alpharetta, Georgia. He’s the lead singer and lead guitarist.

The Wall

Talk to You Later (Watch for me walking across the screen in blue swim trunks, sorry, not topless! I videotaped their gig that day. I also chased my 4 year old Matthew whom you will also see a few times wearing yellow floaties and a little chubby…ok…ok…he’s a mini-me!)
