Lose My Soul

I was blown away by this powerful song from Toby Mac featuring the amazing Kirk Franklen and sensational Mandisa (from American Idol fame a few years ago). I’m still numb from the experience and deeply touched and inspired. It’s a beautiful song first and foremost but the message is so important. Especially considering the current economy as so many of us struggle to make ends meet and survive.

The message is important even for those of us who have been blessed with some level of success. How much are we willing to sacrifice for even more success and financial gain? Are you willing to sell your soul to gain the world? I know that I don’t think it’s worth the cost.

I think the song is great no matter what your religious background or even if you’re a believer at all. The music is magnificent and the message so critical for us all to hear, especially for those experiencing tough times which can make good people do bad things.

The ending of this video is breath-taking. I get chills just thinking of it. I was on the edge of my seat and have to admit moved in a profound way. This song will stay with me a very long time.

Here’s a live performance with TobyMac, Mr. Franklin and Mandisa at the Dove Awards

Here’s the making of the music video

LOSE MY SOUL
(feat. Kirk Franklin, Mandisa)
Man I wanna tell ya’ll something, Man.
Man I’m not gonna let these material thing’s, get in my way, ya’ll.
I’m trying to get somewhere.
I’m trying to get somewhere,
Thats real and pure and true and eternal.
Father God, I am clay in your hands,
Help me to stay that way through all life’s demands,
‘Cause they chip and they nag and they pull at me,
And every little thing I make up my mind to be,
Like I’m gonna be a daddy whose in the mix,
And I’m gonna be a husband who stays legit,
And I pray that I’m an artist who rises above,
The road that is wide and filled with self love,
Everything that I see draws me,
Though it’s only in You that I can truly see that its a feast for the eyes- a low blow to purpose.
And I’m a little kid at a three ring circus.
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
(Mr. Franklin, Step up to the mic sir)
The paparazzi flashes, and that they think that it’s you,
But they don’t know that who you are is not what you do,
True, we get it twisted when we peak at the charts,
Yo before we part from the start,
Where’s your heart?
You a pimp, hustler?
Tell me what’s your title,
America has no more stars, now we call them idols,
You sit idle, While we teach prosperity,
The first thing to prosper should be inside of me.
We’re free…
Not because of 22′s on the range,
But Christ came in range, we said yes now we changed,
Not the same, even though I made a fall,
Since I got that call, no more Saul, now I’m Paul.
(YEP!)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
Don’t wanna walk away,
Don’t wanna walk away
How do I sense the tide that’s rising?
De-sensitizing me from living in light of eternity,
How do I sense the tide that’s rising?
It’s hypnotizing me from living in light of eternity,
How do I sense the tide that’s rising?
De-sensitizing me from living in light of eternity.
(Lord what we gon do,We’re relying on you,
all eyes are on you Lord,
all eyes are on you, all eyes are on you Jesus.)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
(Don’t let me lose my soul, my soul.)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
(This is my honesty, Father, won’t you cover me.)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
(Don’t wanna walk away, and all those people say)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
(Don’t wanna lose, I don’t wanna lose my soul.)
Lord forgive us when we get consumed by the things of this world,
That fight for our love, and our passion,
As our eyes are open wide and on you.
Grant us the privilege of your world view,
And may your kingdom be, what wakes us up, and lays us down.
(Hallelujah, Don’t wanna lose our soul,
No, Don’t wanna lose my soul.)
Hey excuse me,
I’m looking or the after party,
Toby,
Haha, yeah, last door on the left, you’ll hear it.
Thanks,
No problem.
Don’t let me lose my soul, I never wanna walk away,
I don’t wanna lose my soul,
No, no, no.
Don’t let me, don’t let me, lose my soul,
I don’t wanna walk away,
Don’t let me walk away,
Na na na na no,
Don’t let me lose, my soul,
I’m never gonna walk away.

This is Your Time

On April 20, 1999, Cassie Bernall, a junior at Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado, was a typical teenager having a typical day, then a classmate aimed a gun at her and asked if she believed in God. She said “Yes”. Even though she witnessed another classmate get shot for answering yes moments earlier, she still said “Yes”, knowing what would happen next. It was an amazing display of faith and courage that no one will ever forget. Here’s the official website in honor of Cassie. You can also read an excerpt from a book written by Cassie’s Mother called “She Said Yes“.

Michael W. Smith wrote a song for Cassie and called it “This Is Your Time”, which won the Dove Award for the Best Song of the year (Dove is the Christian equivalent to the Grammy Awards).

Michael had this to say, “I went to Littleton (Colorado) to sing Friends at the Columbine Memorial Service and it was a day that impacted me greatly. It was so over-whelming emotionally, that I just had to find a way to cope with it and to digest it all, so I found myself at the keyboard writing music. Meeting Cassie Bernall’s family inspired me the most. Cassie claimed she believed in God and lost her life for it. I have written a song called, This Is Your Time, which is a challenge for us all to recognize through Cassie’s life, that now is our time to stand up and live life unabashedly for God.”

We should all strive to live our lives with such faith and conviction. This is our time. We should live every moment and leave nothing to chance.

The song and the music video are unforgettable. The video footage at the beginning is Cassie which is amazing to see. The other absolutely chilling part of the song and video is the ending sequence with the bagpipes blaring in the distance. What an incredible experience, what she taught us and this haunting tribute to her life. I still get chills at the end when the bag pipes start playing.

Here are the powerful words to the song:

This Is Your Time

It was a test we could all hope to pass
But none of us would want to take
Faced with the choice to deny god and live
For her there was one choice to make

This was her time
This was her dance
She lived every moment
Left nothing to chance
She swam in the sea
Drank of the deep
Embraced the mystery
Of all she could be
This was her time

Though you are mourning, and grieving your loss
Death died a long time ago
Swallowed in life, so her life carries on
Still, it’s so hard to let go

This was her time
This was her dance
She lived every moment
Left nothing to chance
She swam in the sea
Drank of the deep
Embraced the mystery
Of all she could be
What if tomorrow
What if today
Faced with the question
Oh, what would you say

This is your time
This is your dance
Live every moment
Leave nothing to chance
Swim in the sea
Drink of the deep
Fall on the mercy
And hear yourself praying
Won’t you save me

Lead Me On

Amy Grant has done a ton of great songs, Christian or otherwise. For some reason, “Lead Me On” has always been one my favorites. Michael W. Smith wrote the song, so it’s no wonder why I love it because he’s another favorite of mine.

The music video is well done too. She’s out in the mountains so there’s a great deal of breath-taking views (including the ever gorgeous Amy herself). Wonderful message too about having faith in God and asking Him to lead the way.

Here are two videos of the song. First, the one in the mountains and the second is a live performance of Amy Grant with the composer, Michael W. Smith. Followed by the lyrics

LEAD ME ON

Shoulder to the wheel
For someone elses selfish gain
Here there is no choosing
Working the clay
Wearing their anger like a ball and chain.
Fire in the field
Underneath a blazing sun
But soon the sun was faded
And freedom was a song
I heard them singing when the day was done
Singing to the holy one.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking…lead on.
Waiting for the train
Labelled with a golden star
Heavy hearted boarding
Whispers in the dark
Where are we going–is it very far?
Bitter cold terrain
Echoes of a slamming door
In chambers made for sleeping, forever
Voices like thunder in a mighty roar
Cry to the lord.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking…lead on.
Man hurts man
Time and time, time again
And we drown in the wake of our power
Somebody tell me why.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking…lead on.
Lead me on
Lead me on
To a place where the river runs
Into your keeping, oh.
Lead me on
Lead me on
The awaited deliverance
Comforts the seeking…lead on.

God of Wonders

Today’s my birthday so I’d like to share one of my favorite songs of all-time. “God of Wonders” is by Third Day and Caedman’s Call for a special City on the Hill project they did together with other Christian music artists. I hope you listen to the song even if you’re not a Christian. It’s just a celebration of this world and the life that we are blessed with. I remember the first time I saw this music video in church several years ago. It came at a very dark time in my personal and professional life and it inspired me to turn things around for the good. Since then, I play this song every once in a while just as a reminder and it always fills me with hope and inspiration. It’s a perfect song to remind us all of the big picture, especially when things seem to be caving in all around us. When that happens, play this song or video and turn it up really loud. You’ll feel much better like I do every time I experience it.

Lord of Heaven and Earth
(Lord of all creation)
Lord of Heaven and Earth
Lord of all creation
Of the water, earth and sky
The Heavens are your Tabernacle
Glory To the Lord on high
God of wonders
Beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe
Declares your majesty
You are holy, holy
Early in the morning
I will celebrate the light
And when I stumble into darkness
I will call your name by night
God of wonders
Beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe
Declares your majesty
You are holy, holy
Hallelujah (to the lord of heaven and earth)
Hallelujah (to the lord of heaven and earth)
Hallelujah (to the lord of heaven and earth)
Holy, holy
Holy, holy
God of wonders
Beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
Precious Lord,
Reveal your heart to me
Father hold me, hold me
The Universe
Declares your majesty
You are Holy, Holy
Holy, Holy

Glory Baby

The anguish of suffering a miscarriage stays with you forever. The pain might subside to a certain degree but it will always remain with you deep down inside. You always think about how things could’ve been, what milestone you would’ve celebrated had your baby lived. Yes, it’s a torturous game that parents play but we can’t help it. For some reason, it helps with the healing.

The other thing that seems to give some semblance of peace is music like the wonderful “Glory Baby” by Watermark.
The song is a beautiful tune in and of itself, but when you add in the lyrics and the message of the song then it makes it extra special. It’s become a powerful anthem for all parents that have endured the devastation of losing a child.

If you go to Youtube or do a search on google for Glory Baby you will be amazed by all of the results that you see. There are countless precious souls out there who’ve used this song as their tribute to their lost little angels. It truly is a touching and heart-breaking experience. Here are some of the tributes followed by the lyrics.

GLORY BABY by Watermark

Glory baby you slipped away as fast as we could say baby…baby..
You were growing, what happened dear?
You disappeared on us baby…baby..
Heaven will hold you before we do
Heaven will keep you safe until we’re home with you…
Until we’re home with you…

Miss you everyday
Miss you in every way
But we know there’s a
day when we will hold you
We will hold you
You’ll kiss our tears away
When we’re home to stay
Can’t wait for the day when we will see you
We will see you
But baby let sweet Jesus hold you
‘till mom and dad can hold you…
You’ll just have heaven before we do
You’ll just have heaven before we do

Sweet little babies, it’s hard to
understand it ‘cause we’re hurting
We are hurting
But there is healing
And we know we’re stronger people through the growing
And in knowing-
That all things work together for our good
And God works His purposes just like He said He would…
Just like He said He would…

BRIDGE:
I can’t imagine heaven’s lullabies
and what they must sound like
But I will rest in knowing, heaven is your home
And it’s all you’ll ever know…all you’ll ever know…

Note: There are many excellent online support sites that can help the healing process.

Shine

Salvador’s “SHINE” is an inspirational song in so many ways. First and foremost it is a powerful song of praise for Christians. However, I believe this song can inspire anyone that hears it. The music, the voice and the words are uplifting and just so motivating. We all want to Shine and do our best in life. We want to help others as the song illustrates so well.

My favorite part is when Salvador shares a couple of easy ways that we can Shine as friends in life:
As simple as a passing smile
Or listening a little while
To someone that’s convinced that
They are in this all alone

SHINE

I woke up to another day
Another day to celebrate
Your beauty and your mystery
Is more than any eye can see
I’m not the man I was before
With you my life is so much more
Break the chains and open doors
To a world I can’t ignore

Chorus:
Lord let me shine
Shine like the moon
A reflection of you
All that I do
Lord let me be
A light for your truth
Light of the world
I want to be used
To shine for you

As simple as a passing smile
Or listening a little while
To someone that’s convinced that
They are in this all alone
Well, here’s my chance to share the news
To introduce the good that’s you
Here you go again,
You never cease to blow my mind

Chorus

You’re the love that we all need
You lift us up to our feet,
Hold the key to eternity
The King of Kings alive in me
