Man and Machine

Here’s an old drawing I did many moons ago. I called it “Man and Machine”. I think what I was trying to convey is pretty clear. Even as a young man long before this golden age of the Internet and gadget nirvana I wanted to comment on the relationship of Man and technology. I found it humorous that the very machine we created to help us would in turn need our help.

Google Art Project

Amit Sood from Google gave an exciting demo of the Google Art Project that he’s been working on for a while now. In short, we will be able to visit many museums online and zoom into classic works of art and even create our own art collections to share with others. Obviously, nothing will ever replace the experience of seeing art in person but using technology in this way is a wonderful option to have for art lovers. We can learn more and see more and share our favorite art in ways we could never do before.

To learn more checkout this blog entry: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/explore-museums-and-great-works-of-art.html and go visit the official website: http://www.googleartproject.com

Here is Amit’s delightful presentation of this jaw-dropping technology.

Here’s a closer look at the Art Project.

Behind the scenes look at the Art Project and how to painstakingly capture all of those museums and art work.

9/11 drawing I did

I was cleaning up some stuff from my computer (still) and stumbled across a drawing I did a few days after the shattering impact of 9/11. I was awestruck by the flood of people in the streets of NYC holding up photos of missing loved ones. I still get chills thinking of the expressions of extreme pain and desperation on all those faces. Then I saw the startling images of the world famous new york skyline sans its twin towers. It’s still shocking whenever I see it. Then I saw the lonely lady liberty standing in the midst of smoke and chaos without her beloved twins. All of those images and emotions combined into the drawing you see here. It’s raw and something I did in one take and I never dared to draw it better. It was like a photograph of the heart …my heart for those people…for us all….

Here’s the powerful song “Overcome” by Live that captures the feelings I still have about 9/11

Lust for Life

I’ve always loved Vincent van Gogh, but not just for the beautiful paintings he created. I’ve always been amazed by his life story and how he was able to create such wonderful works of art in the midst of such severe pain and torture. What a true inspiration he is to all of us.

Don McClain’s “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)” has always been one of my favorite songs. He totally captures the essence of Van Gogh. It was such a surreal experience the first time I ever heard this song because it seemed to express everything I always felt for Vincent. It’s still such an emotional song for me. Here’s the music video of the song which shows many of Van Gogh’s incredible work.

As far as the best movie portrayal of Van Gogh it clearly has to be “Lust for Life (1956)” with Kirk Douglas in a tour de force performance! I remember how captivated and spellbound I was by this movie and by Kirk Douglas’ raw and powerful turn as the tortured artist. I still can’t believe that he did not win the Oscar for this work! Not only did he resemble Vincent but he expressed a rainbow of emotions that you believe Van Gogh would’ve felt and expressed. Even in scenes where he doesn’t utter a word Kirk Douglas commands the screen with his expressions and magnetism. Amazing
