Macro-Blogging in a Microwave Society

grass_green_water_5715_l
I coined a new term today called Macro-blogging which I shared in an exchange I had with @ChrisBrogan on twitter. He made a comment about the rather short blog posts he’s been reading so far this year and wondered if it was a new trend. I replied with the following tweet:

“@chrisbrogan I noticed the Hemmingway effect spreading amongst bloggers. Less is more is the credo for the new Macro-blogging age.”

I followed up with this tweet which Chris retweeted:

“By Macro-blogging, I mean zooming in on particular details as in photos instead of using the usual wide angle lens trying to cover too much”

Someone said they didn’t understand what I meant, saying Macro means bigger. My response was this:
”Large in the sense of zooming in closer, not larger as in volume or quantity. More Focus, less words”

The Magnifying Glass Theory

everystockphoto_153674_mIn a way, it was apropos that I shared my Macro-blogging term with Chris Brogan first because we’ve had conversations in the past on a similar subject matter. He had a saying that shared his view on the power of focus:

“The sun can warm a field of daisies or it can burn a hole through metal”

It’s a quote that stuck with me as I have a tendency to lose focus and try to do too much at once. It’s a sickness that’s spread throughout this digital age where we all try to get as much done as possible. The imagery of the same ray of sunshine warming daisies versus the burning hole from the laserbeam of light makes it all very clear. Staying focused is more powerful that spreading yourself too thin.

Less is More

The same goes for blogging and writing about any subject matter. We can try to cover a great deal of ground surrounding a topic (sometimes just to showoff) and take away valuable focus and attention from the heart of the piece or we can devote more time to the real subject matter. Ultimately, it’s a choice every writer makes with every thing we write.

Just as in macro photography where the photographer can zoom in ultra close to reveal rarely seen details of its subject matter, so, too, can writers with the subjects we take aim at. Do we want the wide angle lens viewpoint (which is fine and necessary for some pieces) or do we want to get up close and personal to share as much detail as possible with less words?

Why is the less is more theory so effective and popular? Some would say that it’s because of our microwave society with increasingly shorter attention spans, others will argue that it’s actually conducive for people with hectic schedules with work and busy family life. Either way, it’s impacted every area of our lives. It’s most evident in entertainment as TV shows, motion pictures and even books attempt to grab their audience (reader) by the throat right from the gate. The slow burn and build-up of yesterday is rarely seen but still exists and succeeds from time to time though.

Choose The Right Lens (Pen)

camera_film_film_264235_l The good news is that we have the freedom to choose the tools and approach we want to use. It’s up to each one of us to choose the right lens (pen) for the job at hand. Would the subject be better served with the wide lens, the macro lens or something in between? The ultimate goal should be to capture its essence and truth as clearly and as effectively as possible.

Computer Chronicles

Computer_Chronicles
The Computer Chronicles TV show was on the air from 1983 to 2002. The host was Stewart Cheifet who later did Net Cafe. Here are some very interesting segments on “NEW” technology that we take for granted today. New age things such as the CD, email and a browser!

Here’s the H.P. Touch screen computer! From the 1983!

Here’s a tour of the Boston Computer Museum from 1983!

Here’s the show about optical storage from 1985 introducing something new called the CD!

Here’s the show covering email and a system that read your email to you over the phone. Wow.

Here’s everyone’s favorite crusty curmudgeon Dvorak from 1987!

I love this one. The Mac portable from 1989!

Interesting sidenote: One of the co-hosts was Gary Kildall who created CP/M and the founder of Digital Research, Inc. As legend has it, IBM attempted to license his CP/M operating system for the IBM PC but he resisted and Bill Gates stepped in with DOS and the rest as they say is history. Don’t feel too bad though for Kildall, he eventually sold DRI to Novell and made millions. He did die young though in 1994 at the age of 52.

music is visual

This is an amazing commercial that’s like a mini-movie at 4 minutes long but so worth the payoff. Totally caught me by surprise too. I always say you shouldn’t fast forward through every commercial because every once in a while there’s a gem like this one (even though this wasn’t even in our country). :)

Vulnerable

I just heard this gem from Secondhand Serenade called “Vulnerable” which feels so pure and sincere. I like his voice and its sentiment… how he knows his girl is just as afraid of what they have as he is. Everyone is vulnerable, it’s just that some of us are just better at hiding it. Wonderful song.

Share with me the blankets that you’re wrapped in
because its cold outside cold outside its cold outside
share with me the secrets that you kept in
because its cold inside cold inside its cold inside
and your slowly shaking finger tips
show that your scared like me so
let’s pretend we’re alone
and I know you may be scared
and I know we’re unprepared
but I don’t care
tell me tell me
what makes you think that you are invincible
I can see it in your eyes that you’re so sure
please don’t tell me that I am the only one that’s vulnerable
impossible
I was born to tell you I love you
isn’t that a song already
I get a B in originality
and it’s true I cant go on without you
your smile makes me see clearer
if you could only see in the mirror what I see
and your slowly shaking finger tips
show that your scared like me so
let’s pretend we’re alone
and I know you may be scared
and I know were unprepared
but I don’t care
tell me tell me
what makes you think that you are invincible
I can see it in your eyes that you’re so sure
please don’t tell me that I am the only one that’s vulnerable
impossible
slow down girl you’re not going anywhere
just wait around and see
maybe I am much more you never no what lies ahead
I promise I can be anyone I can be anything
just because you were hurt doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bleed
I can be anyone anything I promise I can be what you need
tell me tell me
what makes you think that you are invincible
I can see it in your eyes that your so sure
please don’t tell me that I am the only one that’s vulnerable
impossible

Stolen

I’ve always liked Dashboard Confessional’s “Stolen”. It’s about having your heart pilfered by someone out of the blue. I like the picture the song paints:

Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced,
Another sun soaked season fades away

"Stolen"
We watch the season pull up its own stakes
And catch the last weekend of the last week
Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced,
Another sun soaked season fades away
You have stolen my heart
Invitation only, grand farewells
Crash the best one, of the best ones
Clear liquor and cloudy eyed, too early to say goodnight
You have stolen my heart
And from the ballroom floor we are in celebration
One good stretch before our hibernation
Our dreams assured and we all, will sleep well
You have stolen
You have stolen my heart
I watch you spin around in your highest heels
You are the best one, of the best ones
We all look like we feel
You have stolen my
You have stolen my heart

Total Recall

total_recall
I’ve always loved science fiction stories and movies and TOTAL RECALL (1990) is one of my favorites of all-time. Even non Sci-Fi fans admit to enjoying this movie because it has such an interesting story behind all the action.

Even though the movie is 20 years old now (wow!), many of the technologies from the film are only now becoming reality. One of them is the full body scanners that airports are starting to use today thanks to terrorists that continue to slip passed security checkpoints. Here’s the scene.

Here’s the same technology but in the subway and this time with people packing concealed weapons.

Here’s a young Sharon Stone using what appears to be a Wii tennis game to sharpen her game.

There are many more cool technologies on display in Total Recall that weren’t in existence such as the giant screen TV screen in the kitchen that also displayed the scenery of choice in virtual windows.

Here’s the trailer along with a bunch of my favorite scenes including the theme music which I love. Ranks up there with the Terminator theme for best Sci-Fi theme. Here’s the Making of Total Recall.

I think Total Recall ranks right up there as one of the best sci-fi movies. It has something for everyone, action for men and a love story for the ladies and plenty of everything else for all others. The concepts of embedding memories such as vacations and controlling one’s identity are still so fascinating.

NOTE: Sadly, one of the Total Recall writers, Dan O’Bannon recently passed away at the age of 63. He also wrote the screenplay for ALIEN (1979),

Happy New Me!

It’s a new year and I’ve decided to simplify my life as much as possible online and offline. I’ve launched this new blog at my own personal domain which will replace the two blogs that I was maintaining: ThePaisano.com and SeizingTheDay.net.

Being able to manage ONE blog instead of two will make things much easier for me. I will still write about the things that I have a passion for, i.e. Technology, movies, music, writing, etc.
I can now just do it all from one centralized location. Also, and more importantly, I finally get to use my real name, not my online brand or persona, Paisano. I will continue to use Pai as my screen name on twitter and elsewhere though.

By the way, I imported all of the posts from both of my blogs so everything is still accessible from here. I couldn’t believe how simple WordPress 2.9 made the import/export process! Previous versions had all kinds of glitches, hiccups and burps, not this one baby! Smmmooth!

As for my other projects, I will be able to focus more time and attention on Dad-O-Matic which continues to grow in popularity as the biggest and the best daddy blog online today! We have many big plans for the site in 2010 including a total new design with many new social networking features!

So, happy new year everyone!
