clash of the Titans

The battle between Microsoft and Apple through the decades has been an incredible saga with many twists and turns as each has taken turns being on top. Ultimately, they know their success has a great deal to do with their arch nemesis. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates know how much they and their respective companies needed one another. Despite all the nastiness and mudslinging, especially in TV commercials, Apple and Microsoft are forever linked together in the history of computers and technology.

Through the years, Steve and Bill have found a way to sit down and discuss things in a respectful manner. They actually find kind things to say about the other (that loud GASPing sound emanates from all those Mac Heads out there).

I’ve shared some posts previously about Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. One was about a wonderful movie called Pirates of Silicon Valley and the other was about a fantastic documentary called Triumph of the Nerds.

Here they are together again discussing each other’s legacy.

Here’s the prologue video that played before Steve Jobs and Bill Gates took the stage at D5

Some Birthday Present

salieri

Today’s Antonio Salieri’s birthday. He was born on 8/18/1750 so he would’ve been 259 had he not died in 1825 at 74. He’s better known as Mozart’s envious and less talented rival as portrayed in the 1984 Oscar winning “Amadeus”.  For many years, there has been theories about what and who killed Mozart who died at the extremely young age of 35 in 1791

Well, just recently a study suggests that Mozart more than likely died from strep infection which was plaguing the region at the time of his death. Here’s more about the study. So, this could be a very happy birthday present to Salieri after all.

Here’s something from the movie Amadeus

mad men yourself

I finally watched Mad Men last night and loved it. Now I see what all the hoopla was about. I loved the writing and acting and especially the period in time (early 60s JFK era). I really like the look and feel of the show, the style in clothes and everything else Americana about it. I plan to catch the first two seasons I missed on DVD right away.

Here’s that Mad Men Yourself website that let’s you create an avatar of yourself in their cool style.

Here’s Mad Pai

let me be myself

I really enjoyed this song “”Let Me Be Myself” by 3 Doors Down, especially their music video. I love the message I took away from it. How we should strive to be our true selves, despite what those around us wish us to be. It’s easier said than done. We all get tangled in a web of obligations and commitments that we lose a piece of ourselves with each decision to be something unauthentic to who we really are.

Look, we all hear that voice inside our head that speaks to us all the time. It is our true self that sits in the center and knows who we are. We need to listen more and follow our bliss and we will be on the path to our destiny.

Watch the video and hang in there for the ending which has a great payoff.

Here are the lyrics

"Let Me Be Myself"
I guess i just got lost
Bein’ someone else
I tried to kill the pain
Nothin ever helped
I left myself behind
Somewhere along the way
Hopin to come back around
To find myself someday
Lately i’m so tired of waiting for you
To say that it’s ok, but tell me
Please, would you one time
Just let me be myself
So i can shine with my own light
Let me be myself
Would you let me be myself
I’ll never find my heart
Behind someone else
I’ll never see the light of day
Living in this cell
It’s time to make my way
Into the world i knew
Take back all of these times
That i gave in to you
Lately i’m so tired of waiting for you
To say that it’s ok, but tell me
Please, would you one time
Let me be myself
So i can shine with my own light
And let me be myself
For a while, if you don’t mind
Let me be myself
So i can shine with my own light
Let me be myself
That’s all i’ve ever wanted from this world
Is to let me be me
Please would you one time
Let me be myself
So i can shine with my own light
Let me be myself
Please would you one time
Let me be myself
So i can shine with my own light
Let me be myself
For a while, if you don’t mind
Let me be myself
So i can shine with my own light
Let me be myself
Would you one time… oooh
Let me be myself
Let me be me

Netflix Nirvana

netflix_4c_white_logo

I love movies and the internet so of course I’m going to be a big fan of Netflix. I love that its popularity continues to grow as more people learn how great it is. I had the same feeling or Tivo when I discovered it and was blown away by how fantastic and life changing it was. The fact that they eventually became partners is just incredible. You’ll see why later.

Here are some little known things about your netflix account as well as some excellent websites and apps that can add tremendous value to the experience.

Netflix RSS feeds displays all kinds of useful RSS feeds about your Netflix account as well as all of the useful RSS feeds that Netflix provides.

Netflix Facebook Connection makes it easy for you to share your Netflix and movie activities with your friends on Facebook with the click of a button.

The Netflix community is an ever growing online social network for Netflix and movie lovers. It’s built within the Ning network so if you already have a ning account you can just sign in to join the Netflix community. Once you’re in, you can add friends, chat, share thoughts, etc.

Twitter for Netflix allows you to manage your Netflix account via Twitter.

Netflix App Gallery

Netflix has an excellent App Gallery of websites and applications for desktops and mobile devices that work with their service. Here are just some of my favorites.

Feedfliks provides tremendous amounts of information and statistics about your Netflix account.

InstantWatcher is one of my favorite sites, period. It gives a wonderful at-a-glance view of all the movies you can watch instantly on Netflix. No muss, no fuss, bada bing, bada boom!

DVD Corral is a fantastic visual way to catalog the movie collection as well as the movies you want to own online.
It connects to Netflix wonderfully so you can actually watch it online if it’s available or you can add it to your queue to be delivered. You can import/export lists which is excellent.
dvdcorral

I like that it provides a couple of handy URLs that you can share with friends such as your movie collection:

as well as the movies you want to watch or own:

Qflip is just a silly way to let others movies for you.

iPhone apps for Netflix

Phoneflicks

Now Playing 2 is an amazing app that does to much to cover here really. In short, it not only tells you which movies are playing near you and when but it also lets you buy the tickets and pops the popcorn (OK I added that last part but you get the gist). They’re included here because they also work with Netflix! You can access your account from your iPhone and manage you queue and other things. Best of all, it’s totally FREE!

i.TV does a great job working with your local TV channel guides. It also has a Netflix connection allowing you to manage your DVD and instant watch queues.
itv

Mobi iNet and Mobi iNet Lite offer access to a boatload of services including Netflix but truth be told, the interface for Netflix isn’t nearly as good as the other apps here. Still, it appears to be a worthy app for all that it offers.

Netflix on Tivo

The ultimate one-two punch has to be Netflix on Tivo which allows you to watch any streaming movie from Netflix on your big screen TV thanks to the Tivo box. Here’s the Tivo HD device with Netflix access.

Final Thoughts

Netflix continues to grow in popularity as it forms new partnerships with other services such as Tivo which only adds value to its service and members. Another trend that I like seeing is the Add to Netflix button popping on in movie reviews such as this one on the New York Times for Little Miss Sunshine. If you love movies then Netflix appears to be a must have service, especially with all of these apps and services that work with your account.

zooey

I LOVE Zooey Deschanel! I’ve seen her in several movies and didn’t even realize it was the same actress. Then I learned how wonderful a singer she is too. Here’s a wonderful video she did for her song “why do you let me stay here” with her co-star from “500 days of SummerJoseph Gordon-Levitt. I really enjoyed their dancing and the quirky choreography. Now that this season’s “So you think you can dance” is done, this was a sweet little quick fix.

Just for comparison sake, here is the original music video for the song. Also cute and quirky but that’s Zooey too.

Zooey did the theme song for Cotton “The fabric of our Lives”

Here’s Zooey singing in ‘ELF” with Will Ferrell, when I first took notice of her.

Here she is in “Yes Man” which I enjoyed a lot, especially her performance.
Her other song “Uh Huh” was even better.

falling for you

Here’s the new song from Colbie Caillat called “Fallin’ for You” co-starring the funny Bobby Moynihan from SNL in a cute video about a most unusual couple. In an interview, Colbie said she was inspired to write the song after spending a lot of time with a friend and then started feeling something much more for him.

She was the one who did the infectious Bubbly

Colbie Caillat – Fallin For You Lyrics

I don’t know but
I think I maybe
Fallin for you
Dropping so quickly
Maybe I should
Keep this to myself
Waiting til I
Know you better
I am trying
Not to tell you
But I want to
Im scared of what youll say
So Im hiding what Im feeling
But Im tired of
Holding this inside my head
Ive been spending all my time
Just thinking about ya
I dont know what to do
I think Im fallin for you
Ive been waiting all my life
and now I found ya
I dont know what to do
I think Im fallin for you
Im fallin for you
As Im standing here
And you hold my hand
Pull me towards you
And we start to dance
All around us
I see nobody
Here in silence
Its just you and me
Im trying
Not to tell you
But I want to
Im scared of what youll say
So Im hiding what Im feeling
But Im tired of
Holding this inside my head
Ive been spending all my time
Just thinking about ya
I dont know what to do
I think Im fallin for you
Ive been waiting all my life
and now I found ya
I dont know what to do
I think Im fallin for you
Im fallin for you
Oh I just cant take it
My heart is racing
The emotions keep spinning out
Ive been spending all my time
Just thinking about ya
I dont know what to do
I think Im fallin for you
Ive been waiting all my life
and now I found ya
I dont know what to do
I think Im fallin for you
Im fallin for you
I cant stop thinking about it
I want you all around me
And now I just cant hide it
I think Im fallin for you (x2)
Im fallin for you
Ooohhh
Oh no no
Oooooohhh
Oh Im fallin for you

John Hughes

John Hughes, One of my favorite writer/directors, passed away today at the age of 59. He was apparently walking in Manhattan when he suffered a heart attack. I’m really sad about it which I know is silly because I didn’t know the man but he made so many movies that I loved and that were a part of my youth and my life. I still watch them and reference them a lot as witnessed on this blog. The same is true regarding our culture which considers his work a part of the fabric of the 1980s. His teen anthems like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club and 16 Candles (to name but a few) are still referenced everywhere including television, movies and on social networks.

For example, in an eerie twist of fate, John passes away on the same day of the season finale of “So You Think You Can Dance” which featured its most touching and most popular dance number which was the tribute to breast cancer survivors set to “This Woman’s Work” which was featured in John’s “She’s Having a Baby” exactly 20 years ago. Side note: The choreographer’s friend that inspired this piece learned she was cancer free today.

Here’s the amazing number that celebrates the spirit of love and life

Here’s the powerful scene from what I consider John Hughes’ best work.

His peak was indeed the 1980s starting with National Lampoon’s Class Reunion in 1982 and ending with Christmas Vacation in 1989.  Here are all 16 movies he wrote and/or directed in this amazingly prolific period which included many hits. He only directed 8 movies as indicated below (Curly Sue in 1991 was his 8th and last)

Class Reunion (1982)
Mr. Mom (1983)
Vacation (1983)
Nate and Hayes (1983)
Sixteen Candles (1984)
The Breakfast Club (1985) Directed too
European Vacation (1985)
Weird Science (1985) Directed too
Pretty in Pink (1986) Directed too
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) Directed too
She’s Having a Baby (1988) Directed too
The Great Outdoors (1988)
Uncle Buck (1989) Directed too
Christmas Vacation (1989) Directed too

His success only continued and perhaps escalated in the 1990s thanks to the Home Alone series that started in 1990. However, he thus embarked down a different road. He no longer spoke for teens but seemed focused on tiny tykes. For example, besides the Home Alone movies, he also did all five Beethoven movies, 101 Dalmations, Flubber, the 1994 remake of the classic Miracle on 34th Street.

My personal favorite was “She’s Having a Baby”, perhaps his most grown up movie. It truly captured the essence of being newlyweds dealing with the birth of their first baby. I also love how he captured the feeling of living in suburbia and trying to find success in your career. John Hughes truly had a wonderful career and hopefully a happy life knowing how much joy he brought to our lives. His movies will continue to that forever.

chantal

I’ve only recently become a fan of  Chantal Kreviazuk. Well, not really. As it turns out, she’s done so many songs I’ve loved but I just didn’t know her name. For example, she did “Weight of the World” from “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”.
She’s also written many songs for other artists.

Here’s her twitter account @Chantalk and a couple of her songs/videos

Weight of the World

Weight Of The World (Album Version) – Chantal Kreviazuk

I used to carry the weight of the world
And now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly
I don’t know why I was so afraid… all the time Memories seemed to bother me.. my whole life
I used to carry the weight of the world
And now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly
I used to carry the weight of the world
And now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly
I don’t know why I was so ashamed
Such a waste of time
And I don’t know who I was trying to be
All those lies
I used to carry the weight of the world
And now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly
I used to carry the weight of the world
And now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly
Oh and there’s always something
Or somebody right behind
Well we’re not meant to be everything
We’re just a piece
So spread your wings
Oh I don’t know why I was so afraid all the time
I used to carry the weight of the world
And now all I wanna do is spread my wings and fly…
