Social Media's Trojan Horse for the E…

Don’t look now but social media and social networking tools have begun its assault on the enterprise! They have successfully penetrated company firewalls and have started to infiltrate corporate email systems without anyone noticing yet!

How have they accomplished this impressive task despite all of the security measures that anti-social media administrators have set in place? Well, very simply and quietly via plug-ins such as the clever Outlook email service called XOBNI which has been covered on here previously.

The latest version of Xobni (inbox spelled backwards by the way) includes a hook into LinkedIn which means whenever you are viewing an email in Outlook you can now see their LinkedIn profile and information! This includes their photo, title, current emplorer details and much more! It might not look or sound like a big deal but trust me, this is a game-changer folks!

This is a major breakthrough for the future of the enterprise and incorporating the best of social media into the workplace. It is the shot heard round the world wide web. Ok, maybe it’s more of a small ripple in the ocean which ultimately becomes a tidal wave down the stream!

The concept of sneaking social media into the enterprise has been covered on here before but that process was far more obvious than this new stealth method. Talk about sneaky! Xobni has established a blueprint for all other web 2.0 services that want to go to work with corporate America and world wide for that matter. They just need to figure out how to present their service in a similar subtle and useful manner. Sometimes a whisper is far more powerful than a shout.

For the record, Xobni isn’t the first service to attempt this invasion of the enterprise, but they have come up with the best and most useful service. Some others have managed to scale the walls of IT defense.  Here are a couple that come to mind that I used a great deal:

Breaking & Entering Innovators

Plaxo was actually the first service that I can recall that plugged into your Outlook client and connected you to your online account and all your contacts and friends. When they added their Pulse technology you then had your entire social network in your Outlook toolbar! Think FriendFeed for your email client. Here’s the Outlook plugin for Plaxo.

Outwit was another Outlook plugin that allowed you to read and post Twitter messages. It didn’t have all the bells and whistles of other Twitter clients such as Thwirl but it was and still is a very clever way to sneak in a web service that blended well with your existing business communication tool, in this case your email client.

Lyrical Hip Hop as new art form

I love “So You Think You Can Dance” and have enjoyed all four seasons of it! This is their best one yet. Every dancer is so versatile. There are hip hoppers doing amazing ballroom dances and contemporary dancers doing some sick hip hop! Check out this performance last night by Mark and Chelsie who are no where near hip hop dancers but they did a wonderful job with this number. The theme was about the struggles that couples go thru due to long days at the office and job pressures. Powerful piece. Look at the emotions they express on their faces during their performance. Lyrical hip hop as art. Wow. Gotta love it.

Here’s the video which includes behind the scenes information about the dancers and the judges reviews.

G.I. Joe

My brothers and I loved G.I. Joe! It wasn’t a doll for boys, but an action figure!
It’s amazing how popular it still is today. They’ve even re-issued the original G.I. Joe as a special collector’s edition.

My little brother has an impressive collection today of not only G.I. Joe, but many of the toys and games we played with in a our youth. It’s amazing how the memories flood the mind when you see these things from your childhood!

Here’s the history of G.I. Joe

Here’s Matt Mason, another series of action figures for boys. This time, instead of soldiers, these heroes were astronauts!

Scared Straight

scared_straight

Scared Straight (1980) Won the Academy Award for best documentary in 1980 as well as the Emmy Award. It was a landmark event for primetime television because it was the first time that obscenities were allowed on the air.

The concept was simple yet extremely powerful. They brought a group of juvenile delinquents to a state prison to speak to incarcerated convicts face to face. The teens had no idea what was in store for them. The experience changed most of their lives as a 20th anniversary special follow-up revealed. Thus, most indeed were scared straight! They even followed up on some of the inmates who participated in the documentary.

I remember being completely captivated by the experience and even felt scared myself just thinking about winding up in such a place for whatever reason. It truly helped keep my nose clean while growing up on the mean streets of Newark, NJ!

Here are some videos from the original Scared Straight as well as the follow up they did 20 years later in 1999 (original was filmed in 1978 but released in 1980).
The last part of the 20th anniversary special is not on youtube for some reason so forgive me for not having the complete special available. I will add it as soon as I find it somewhere.

***UPDATE***
Sad news. Here’s what I found out in the YouTube comments of part six of the videos here:
“In 2007 Angelo was convicted of a 1982 murder where he stabbed a girl to death and then sexually assaulted her after that. He was caught by DNA evidence 25 yrs after the fact, so at the time of this interview he had known what disgusting things he had done and thought he got away with it. Uck, the lying scum makes me sick! Don’t think he was scared straight at all.”

Others have confirmed this shocking update about Angelo Speziale who lived as a free man for over 25 years with this horrific crime. He got married and had three children too. I guess they will share this update when they do a 30th anniversary edition. Here’s news coverage of the case that took 25 years to solve. Amazingly, if this guy wasn’t stupid enough to get arrested for shoplifting in 2003 then he never would’ve gotten caught for this heinous crime. Thank goodness for stupidity as well as the brilliance of the DNA detectives and New jersey lawmakers who allow many more cold cases to be re-opened!

Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” hit me like a ton of bricks when I first heard it many years ago. It’s only grown more powerful thru the years and its meaning ever deeper and more truthful. What a personal and moving experience it is hearing her sing about feeling like an ugly duckling in a world made for beauty queens.

The song won a Grammy award in 1975 for best female vocal performance and reached number three in the country. It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for songs this year (2008). She performed the song on the first Saturday Night Live as well.

Here’s Janis performing the song some thirty years apart (1976 & 2006). She still sounds fantastic! Incidentally, I think Janis looked absolutely lovely in her 1976 performance!

Here are the touching lyrics to the beautiful song

at seventeen

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
In high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn’t all it seems
At seventeen
A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said, Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
And the rich relationed hometown queen
Married into what she needs
A guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly
Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
Indebentures of quality
And dubious integrity
Their small town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received
At seventeen
To those of us who knew the pain
Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
And dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me
We all play the game and when we dare
To cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say, come dance with me
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me
At seventeen

Beautiful Girls

Beautiful Girls (1996) is a vastly underrated movie in my book. It’s one of my favorites that I watch from time to time. There are so many wonderful performances but Natalie Portman stole the show as the precocious Lolita.
She captivates and confuses Will (Tim Hutton) who’s gone back home to do some soul-searching before getting married.

The central theme of men’s obsession with beautiful women hits home as does the realistic portrayal of male friendships. The neighborhood reminded me so much of my youth in Newark, New Jersey but it could be anywhere really.

The storyline involving Matt Dillon’s character was also very interesting and ultimately touching. There’s a wonderful scene where Matt comes to grips with reality and realizes he’s not “King of the hill” back in school anymore and needs to finally grow up and avoid making commitments.

There are many other entertaining subplots, including the manic Paul (Michael Rappaport) who’s fixated on marrying a supermodel. He gives a hilarious speech on the glory of beautiful girls. He also has to deal with his commitment issues.

In a nutshell, I love this movie!

Here are some of the best scenes from this gem of a movie!

The Courtship of Eddie's Father

Today is Father’s Day so I’m remembering one of my favorite TV shows ever, “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” starring Bill Bixby. I’ve always loved that show and I think it was special to me because I grew up without a dad so I always longed for such a relationship. Now that I’ve become a father myself (I have three amazingly wonderful kids), I find that this TV show has taken on extra special meaning to me thru the years.

I really try my best to enjoy each and every moment that I am blessed to have with my children, especially the kind of moments that this show’s intro’s usually highlighted. Even during such tender, sweet moments I will get images from this show and it’ll make me smile.

The theme song is also one of my favorites, “Best Friend” by Harry Nilsson.
I remember singing that one all the time when my son was a baby and I still sing it to him on occasion, much to his dismay. Here are the words.

BEST FRIEND
by Harry Nilsson

People let me tell you ’bout my best friend,
He’s a warm hearted person who’ll love me till the end.
People let me tell you bout my best friend,
He’s a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.
People let me tell you ’bout him he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talkin’ man to man or whether we’re talking son to son.
Cause he’s my best friend.
Yes he’s my best friend.
(scat finish).

Here’s an example of the wonderful intro’s to the show.

Here’s a clip with a slightly different version of the song by Nillson

Here’s yet another interesting variation, called My Girlfriend.
